Browsers seeping ever more into the OS

I first saw seepage with Chome, 2 years ago, where a page could be dragged out as a dektop icon. Whilst it never rocked my world some of the more recent  "seepage"'s are starting to tilt it somewhat.

IE9 Pinning
IE9 can pin webpages to the Start Menu, and once thats done you can add icon overlays. Checkout some of the other methods of the window.external object which allows you to interoperate with the OS.

If you visit toobify.com with IE9 you can see the "Pin to Start" button on the top right... otherwise this is what you get. A video player controls.

Google Chrome Notifications
"Notifications" are like popups but tackier, and subtle compared to popups. I mashed up notification's with shared webworkers to create a little popout remote control for toobify.com. Check it out now with your chrome browser, hit the remote button on the top right.

When your playing a video you'll see something like in the corner of your dekstop screen.

How cool is that?

Both Chrome and IE are pushing to make web site/application come out and behave a like more desktop apps. Since they are the number one application on the PC, it makes sense.

Whats next

Not far off is seemless browser integration with your devices, webcams, etc...

After that is file system access or far more than the current 5mb localStorage space.

I'm going to research ApplicationCache next, so watch this space.
